Song #57: Piano Man by Billy Joel

Isn't it funny when you've heard a song for years and loved a song for years, and you hear it one day and hear a lyric that you've never really paid attention to and realize how amazingly brilliant it is?  That's what happened to me tonight when I heard "Piano Man" by Billy Joel.  "They're sharing a drink they call loneliness but it's better than drinking alone."  WOW, that is awesome!  He's got to be one of the best storyteller songwriters of all time.

Song #56: America The Beautiful by Ray Charles

So, I've been MIA lately.  The last several months have been full of change and have kept me busy.  But I take a moment today to mention my song of the day today.  On this day of America's birth, I've chosen "America The Beautiful" as sung by the amazing Ray Charles.  His version has always been my favorite version of this song.  The video I found is a slide show to the song of photos that are just plain American.  I'm so proud to live in this amazing country.  I do not take my freedom for granted and I thank all of the soldiers past & present for their sacrifice to this great land.  This land is beautiful!  Happy Birthday America!  You are loved!  May God continue to bless you!

Song #55: "Back Where I Come From" by Mac Macanally

I adore Mac Macanally & I adore his song, "Back Where I Come From." Most people probably know this song as sung by Kenny Chesney, but you can't beat the original!

Song #54: "Here Comes The Sun" by The Beatles

I can't believe it's been a year since the historic Nashville, TN flood.  I chose "Here Comes The Sun" by The Beatles because I saw this youtube video last year & it was one of the best slideshows I saw about the flood.  God bless all those who's homes & lives were affected by the flood.  God bless the people of Nashville for being the amazing helpers to our neighbors.  I'm so proud to call this city home!

Song #53: "One For My Baby & One More For The Road" by Frank Sinatra

"One For My Baby & One More For The Road" by 'ole blue eyes' is just such a great classic standard.  I only learned today that Johnny Mercer co-wrote it.  He's becoming one of my fav songwriters.

Song #52: "Mr. Bojangles" by Robbie Williams

I love the song "Mr Bojangles."  There's tons of versions out there & most of them are amazing.  I do love the version from the musical Fosse with Ben Vereen dancing the Bo Jangles part.  But, tonight I'm choosing the Robbie Williams version.  First off Robbie Williams is such an over looked/underestimated pop star.  He did an album of standards that is simply amazing!  If you can, check it out, you won't be disappointed if you like that style of music.  Anyway, here it is.  Hope you love it too!

I went ahead & put the Ben Vereen version on here too.... I mean, why not! :)

Song #51: "Walking In Memphis" by Marc Cohen

Today I heard a great brand new song about Memphis, which made me think of another great song about Memphis, "Walking In Memphis" by Marc Cohen.  I have ALWAYS loved this song (except the Lonestar cover of it).  Growing up, I traveled to Memphis quite a bit, so I will always have a special place in my heart for this town.  I think that this song & video both are a great tribute to it.  Aaahh...memories.

Song #50: "My Blue Heaven" by Norah Jones

There's a tribute album to Fats Domino that came out a few years ago.  Norah Jones covered "My Blue Heaven."  I just love her version of that song.  The rest of the record ain't half bad either.  Check it out! PS. I have no idea what this video really is.  Looks like a slide show that someone put together with the song in the background.

Song #49: "So In Love" written by Cole Porter

I don't care who sings "So In Love," as long as it is pointed out that it is written by the magnificent Cole Porter.  If you've not seen the movie about his live, 'DeLovely,' I highly recommend it.  Kevin Cline plays Cole in such an honorable way.  I started to love this song because of that movie.  Hope you check it out!

Song #48: "Rhapsody In Blue" by George Gershwin

Yesterday my friend was going to the symphony which got me thinking of who I'd like to go hear played at the symphony.  Well my favorite piece is "Rhapsody In Blue" by George Gershwin, so it's my song of the day.  I've always love the great songbook composers like George Gershwin, Cole Porter & Irving Berlin, but Gershwin has always been my favorite.  This song reminds me of the feeling of being in New York City.  It's just a beautiful piece.  Hope you enjoy it too...happy Saturday!

Song #47 "Let's Try Goodbye" by Amy Dalley

One of the things that really irks me about the music industry is that there are some of the most talented people in this city are not the ones who are the household names.  It's likely that if you don't live in this town the general public may never hear of them.  It's really heartbreaking because not only are they they uber-talented, but they are incredibly hardworking.  So, tonight I've chosen a song my a good friend (and one of my 4 blog followers), Amy Dalley & the song is "Let's Try Goodbye."  I've always loved this song of hers & she sounds amazing on it.  She's had a few songs out on the radio so some folks may know her music.  If you don't, I urge you to go now & buy her cd!  I have always believed that she was one of the most talented female writers in this town.  Anyway, I'll shut up and let her music speak for it's self!

Song #46 "When The Saints Go Marching In" by Louis Prima

Happy Mardi Gras y'all!!!  In honor of Fat Tuesday & New Orleans, I'm picking "When The Saints Go Marching In" by Louis Prima (a Nola native).  I miss celebrating Mardi Gras since moving to Nashville.  I did manage to bring a King Cake to the office today.  Love it! Laissez les bons temps rouler!!!

Song #45: "Where The Boat Leaves From" by Zac Brown Band

I'm choosing "Where The Boat Leaves From" by Zac Brown Band today because it makes me think of the beach.  This little cold snap makes me want to be on a beach and I'm not, so I can at least dream of it.
Happy Monday!

Song #44: "We Didn't Start The Fire" by Billy Joel

Little known fact...I know about 80% of the lyrics to "We Didn't Start The Fire" by Billy Joel.  I love this song so much.  "JFK blown away, what else do I have to say?!"

Song #43: "83" by John Mayer

I love John Mayer's Room For Squares record. In fact its probably in my top 10 favorite albums of all time.  The song "83" reminds me of my childhood.  I just love it.  This isn't the best version of the song, so check it out on the album.  Happy Friday!

Wednesday, February 23, 2011

Song #42: "I Want You Back" by The Jackson 5

"I Want You Back" by The Jackson 5 has to be one of the best pop songs ever written.  I just love it!  Whenever I hear it, it makes me so happy.  Gotta love that young Michael Jackson.  Hope it puts a smile on your face today too!

Song #41 "So This Is Love" by Sara Gazarek

Yes, this is the same "So This Is Love" from Disney's Cinderella.  I love this version by this artist Sara Gazarek.  She's an amazing jazz singer.  I wish she would make another album.  This isn't the best version of her singing this song.  Check out her live album with it.

Song #40 "What I Did For Love" from A Chorus Line

17 years ago today, the world lost a very amazing young lady.  She was so talented & beautiful.  She sang this song at a high school talent show, so I always think of her when I hear it.  I miss you Meredith!

Song #38 "The Way You Look Tonight" by Frank Sinatra

Since today is Valentine's day, I've chosen my favorite song ever (that just happens to be a love song).  It's "The Way You Look Tonight" by Frank Sinatra (the best version ever!).  Happy love day!!!!

Sunday, February 13, 2011

Song #37 "Walking On Broken Glass" by Annie Lennox

So, I've totally been bad about deciding on a song everyday lately.  Not sure that anyone even looks a this blog so I'm sure that it won't even matter.  So anywho...I've chosen "Walking On Broken Glass" by Annie Lennox.  Annie has got to have one of the most amazing voices out there.  I also love this video cause John Malkovich is in it and when I just re-watched it, Hugh Laurie (aka Dr. House) is in it too.  Regardless of who's in the video, I love this song and she sings the fire out of it!

Song #36 "Buena Sera" by Louis Prima

I adore Louis Prima.  I chose "Buena Sera" tonight because I just had a huge Italian meal at Carrabba's.  It's my favorite song by Louis too.  Mainly because of the line about the wedding ring in Napoli.  It kind of reminds me of when I got engaged in Florence, Italy...then we went to Napoli (well actually the Amalfi Coast, but we did go to the train station in Napoli).

Song #35 "Home" by Marc Broussard

I'm mainly choosing "Home" by Marc Broussard tonight because I'm so glad to be home after it took me almost 4 hours to get here.  Dang snow & dang terrible driving Nashvillians.  I do also love Marc Broussard.

Song #34 "Always Look On The Bright Side Of Life" by Monty Python

Oops, I forgot to blog yesterday.  Well, I'm gonna be positive and go on with it.  I adore the Monty Python show & movies.  I even got to see the original broadway cast of Spamalot (which was amazing!).  So, I've chosen "Always Look On The Bright Side Of Life" tonight because underneath the humor, I do like it's message.  I'm definitely a sunny side up kind of thinker.  I guess you could say that I would even recommend this song as advice to some people.

Song #33 "Lay Back Down" by Eric Lindell

I don't even remember how I found out about Eric Lindell, but I've definitely become a big fan of his.  Hope you'll dig him too.

Song #32 "Scenes From An Italian Restaurant" by Billy Joel

One of the best concerts I've ever seen is Billy Joel (next to Prince & Paul McCartney).  I love the way he tells a story like in "Scenes From An Italian Restaurant."  What an amazing songwriter & artist.

Song #31 Won't Get Fooled Again by The Who

The Who just oozes rock & roll.  Won't Get Fooled Again is one of my favs of theirs.  Of course most people will also recognize it from one of the CSI intros.  Happy Rock & Roll Friday!

Song #30 - King Of The Road by Roger Miller

I think Roger Miller is such a great songwriter.  I bought a CD of his greatest hits a few years ago and I just love it.  People don't write songs like that anymore (well, radio wouldn't play them so they don't write 'em and how sad would it be if we never had Roger Miller).  King Of The Road is one of my favorites that he did.  I love this version from Roger's show with Dean Martin.

Song #29 "Can't Buy Me Love" by The Beatles

"Cant Buy Me Love" by The Beatles is one of my top 5 favorite songs of all time.  I ALWAYS listen to it when it comes on my iPod or on the radio.  It always puts me in a good mood.  The lyrics are so simple and catchy and that's what's so amazing about it.  Hope it puts you in a good mood too.

Song #28 "Ants Marching" by Dave Matthews Band

When I think about Dave Matthews Band, it takes me back to my senior year in high school when the Under The Table & Dreaming album came out (still my favorite).  I chose "Ants Marching" today because I heard it on the radio and it took me back to those innocent days when I thought I knew it all and really had no clue.  Funny how music can do that!  Anyway, here's today's song...

Monday, January 31, 2011

Song #27 "Seasons Of Love" from Rent

This is one of my favorite songs ever from a musical.  I just get nostalgic listening to it.  I've you've not seen Rent (well rent it on DVD).  It's mostly the original cast from the Broadway play (of course the play is better in my opinion).  It's such a good story & the music in it is just great.

Song #26 "Paris Ooh La La" by Grace Potter & the Nocturnals

If you've not heard of Grace Potter & the Nocturnals, you need to check them out ASAP!  AMAZING!!!  Here's my favorite song off their latest record...it's called "Paris, Ooh La La."

Song #25 "Down On The Corner" by Creedence Clearwater Revival

CCR is one of my favorite groups.  I became a fan when I was in college.  I even did a paper on their "Willy & The Poor Boys" album for one of my classes at MTSU.  This is my favorite song of theirs.  I don't really know why, but it just is.  I think it just puts me in a good mood.  It's definitely in my top 10 fav songs list.

Song #25 "Fruitcakes" by Jimmy Buffett

Poor Jimmy Buffett who fell off stage early this week.   I do love him so!  I love this song, it just makes me giggle.  The first time I remember hearing it was when I was working at Limited Too in '96 as it was playing during the spring break season (so random I know).  Anyway, we're all a bunch a fruitcakes aren't we?!

Song #24 "You Can't Take The Honky Tonk Out Of The Girl" by Brooks & Dunn

Okay, those who know me had to know that this was coming, a song that my hubs wrote.  I chose t"You Can't Take The Honky Tonk Out Of The Girl" by Brooks & Dunn (longest title ever) today mainly cause in the last 2 days it's popped up on my iPod.  So if you don't know me, this song was written by my husband, Bart and Bob DiPiero.  It was Bart's first co-write with Bob, first demo, cut & single.  (Little known fact, the band cut the track of the song the day after they had all gone to see the Rolling Stones)  A pretty amazing feat for someone who changed careers in his late 30's.  I'm so proud of him for following his dream.   And who better to have a first cut with than B&D. They cut the crap out of it!!!  And this song paid off the house, so I thank you Kix & Ronnie!  Woo oo oo oo!!!!

Song #23 "Bye Bye Blackbird" from Fosse

I love musical theater.  I love the choreography of Bob Fosse.  I love "Bye Bye Bird" from the Broadway production of Fosse.  Here it is...enjoy!

Song #22 "Glitter In The Air" by Pink

Okay, I totally forgot to do this yesterday.  I'm not sure if anyone noticed.  Oh well.  So today, I'm picking one of my favorite songs from last year, "Glitter In The Air" by Pink.  It's the song she sang at the Grammys last year.  I really believe that Pink is one of the most talented artists out there.  I think this is the best song off her Funhouse record.  "There you are sitting in the garden clutching my coffee, calling me sugar, you called me sugar"...dang that's good!!!  What do you think?

Sunday, January 23, 2011

Song #21 "Rolling In The Deep" by Adele

I'm not the biggest fan of Adele, but I heard this song on XM this week and have since bought it on iTunes & worn it out.  I love it.  It may make me want to buy her entire album.  Check it out...

Saturday, January 22, 2011

Song #20 "Bring It On Home To Me" by Sam Cooke

So tonight I went to Amazon.com & bought Sam Cooke's greatest hits (31 songs) for $3.99.  A pretty good deal, right!  I've have a version of "Bring It On Home To Me" by Marc Broussard, but never had Sam Cooke's version.  Well I do now...and I just love this song.  It's just good, plain & simple.

Friday, January 21, 2011

Song #19 "Buddy Holly" by Weezer

"Buddy Holly" by Weezer was the last song I heard before I came home today.  I always forget how much I like that song until it's on the radio.  The video is even more fun!  Happy Friday!!!

Thursday, January 20, 2011

Song #18 "Long Time Gone" by the Dixie Chicks

I miss the Dixie Chicks!  I'm sure this will be one of many Chicks songs on the list.  Long Time Gone is the one I picked today.  I just love it & it's so well written!

Song #17 "C'mon Ride The Train" by Quad City DJ's

Okay I know that "C'mon Ride The Train" by Quad City DJ's is an odd choice for song of the day.  I picked it because back when I was in college in Mississippi, I was part of the Hinds Hi-Steppers & we did a dance to this song.  It popped up on my iTunes today and just brought back memories of dancing.  Totally random, I know but it put a smile on my face.

Tuesday, January 18, 2011

Song #16 Some Days You Gotta Dance by The Ranch

Tonight I chose "Some Days You Gotta Dance" by The Ranch.  Most people probably know this song by the Dixie Chicks since they did it on their Wide Open Spaces record, but I like the version by The Ranch (which was headed by Keith Urban...sadly the Ranch broke up).  This is just a fun one.  I need some fun in this dreary day.  How far away are we from Spring?  Eeh...enjoy!

Monday, January 17, 2011

Song #15 Dixie Flyer by Randy Newman

So, I've only within the last year became a fan of Randy Newman.  I chose Dixie Flyer today because for whatever reason, I was yearning to hear it today.  I used to dislike his music very much when I was in college.  I think I had to hit my 30's to appreciate his humor and sarcasm.  I have to credit one of my songwriters, Chris Tompkins (thanks for the recommendation!) who told me to listen to "New Orleans Wins The War" and how amazing the song is, so I did & a light bulb went off!  Now I'm officially a fan!

Sunday, January 16, 2011

Song #14 Twelfth Of Never by Johnny Mathis

Today is my mom's birthday, so I chose her favorite song by her favorite artist in her honor.  She loves this song so much that for as long as I remember she's always told my brother & I that it's the song she wants us to play at her funeral.  I know...it's morbid.  Well, I'm making it her birthday song today (it is a very beautiful song by the way).  Happy Birthday mama!  You're an amazing woman!  Now, here's your Johnny....

Saturday, January 15, 2011

Song #13 Rhythm Of Love by Plain White T's

Rhythm Of Love by Plain White T's is my favorite song right now.  I just love the feel of it.  Every time I hear it, I just feel good.  It's one of those mood changer songs.  I don't think you could hear it and end being in a bad mood.  So if you need a song to pick up your day, I highly suggest this one.

Friday, January 14, 2011

Song #12 - Afternoon Delight by Ron Burgandy & the channel 4 news team

So I just got finished watching Anchorman for the millionth time.  And one of my favorite scenes is when they all sing "Afternoon Delight."  Did you know that in the special features has an actual music video of the song?  Well, I found it and had to pick it as my song of the day.  Who says the song of the day can't be funny?  And this is damn funny.  Go ahead, laugh away & happy Friday!

Thursday, January 13, 2011

Song #11 - "Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy" by The Andrews Sisters

And now for something completely different...I know I've been on a Brit rock jag lately, so I thought I'd switch it up and show you all random my taste in music.  I choose "Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy" by The Andrews Sisters today.  I know it's old school, but I just love their harmonies.  When I hear this song, I think of a more innocent and patriotic time in our country.  In light of the recent events in our country I have to say it's sad that our country has become so divided.

Anyway, I really am a big fan of groups like The Andrews Sisters and the McGuire Sisters.  I've even found a modern day version of these kind of groups called the Puppini Sisters (a group from England), who covered this song.

Wednesday, January 12, 2011

Song #10 "You Really Got Me" The Kinks

Keeping with the theme of Brit Rock from yesterday, I chose "You Really Got Me" by The Kinks.  I just love the groove of this song.  Ray Davies voice is so rock & roll!

Tuesday, January 11, 2011

Song #9 "Bus Stop" by The Hollies

I love Brit rock from the '60's & I love "Bus Stop" by The Hollies.  I don't know why someone hasn't covered this song yet.  It's definitely in my top 20 songs of all time.

Monday, January 10, 2011

Song # 8 "Winter Song" by Sara Bareilles & Ingrid Michaelson

Nashville has shut down today because of snow, so I have chosen a song that some may want to associate as a Christmas song, but I just think it's a beautiful song about the winter.  The song is "Winter Song" by Sara Bareilles & Ingrid Michaelson.  Their voices are so beautiful & haunting.  They capture the feel of this time of year to me.

Sunday, January 9, 2011

Song #7 "Finally Home" by Mercy Me

On Sundays I'm going to pick Christian songs.  Today I've picked "Finally Home" by Mercy Me.  I think heard this song first in the credits of the movie The Chronicles Of Narnia: Prince Caspian (love C.S. Lewis by the way).  I really just love how beautiful this song is & the message is just wonderful.  Heaven is going to be amazing!

Saturday, January 8, 2011

Song #6 "Can't Help Falling In Love" by Elvis

In honor of the king's birthday, I've picked "Can't Help Falling In Love" by Elvis as my song today.  This is hands down my favorite song that Elvis sings.  Check out this version from his '68 Comeback Special.

Friday, January 7, 2011

Bonus song: Metal Elvis

Okay, I just found this online & am dying over it.  I think it would be so much fun to see this band.  No clue who they are.  They just came up in a search.  The band is Metal Elvis & the song is a mashup of Enter Sandman & Suspicious Minds...hence, Enter Suspicious Minds.

Song #5 "Secrets" by One Republic

I've decided to chose something more current for today's song.  "Secrets" by One Republic is probably my favorite song of 2010.  I love the strings in the song.  The feel of classical meets pop is just so cool to me.  I seriously could listen to this song over & over.  Love it!

Thursday, January 6, 2011

Song #4 "La Grange" by ZZTop

I'm letting out my inner badass.  It always seems to come out when ZZTop's "La Grange" is on.  I start to purse my lips and bob my head along.  This version is when ZZTop did Crossroads with Brooks & Dunn (you can see my buddy Charlie Crowe playing guitar for B&D).

One of my cooler music biz moments came 2 years ago when I did tequila shots with Billy Gibbons at our company Christmas party.  I know, totally name dropping, but that one is worth it.  ZZTop does happen to be one of the few bands that their songs can come on the radio & both Bart & I will listen every time.  Very rare with our different tastes in music.

Song #3 - "Moon River" as sung by Patty Griffin

One of my heroes is Audrey Hepburn and when I think of her, I think of Breakfast At Tiffany's, which makes me think of her signing Moon River.  As much as I love that scene, I love the song much more.  Johnny Mercer & Henry Mancini (the songwriters) created such a beautiful haunting song.  When I went to Savannah 2 years ago, I drove across the actual Moon River and visited Johnny Mercer's grave at Bonaventure cemetery.  I had no idea that Moon River was a real place until that trip.  I've added a link to the Patty Griffin version on iTunes.  It popped up on my iPod today and I just had to share.  I love her version so much.  Her voice adds to the moody & haunting spirit of the song.  I wish there was a video out there of her version, but you'll have to preview (or buy if you like) on iTunes.
http://itunes.apple.com/us/album/moon-river/id298481156?i=298481340

Also, just because I love her & the movie, here's the amazing Audrey singing Moon River in Breakfast At Tiffany's.  I planned to put this song up here today since early this morning & I happened to come home to a package from Tiffany's.  Odd how things like that happen.

Song #2 "Ain't That A Kick In The Head" by Dean Martin

One thing you'll learn about the songs that I like is that many of them are VERY old school.  I love the standards & I love the era of the Rat Pack.  I chose "Ain't That A Kick In The Head" because I feel it's Dino at his best.  This song just makes me want to hop on a plane to Vegas (probably because it's been the background music to alot of movies set in Vegas).  Also makes me want to drink a martini, so cheers y'all!

Monday, January 3, 2011

Song #1 - "Dance Tonight" by Paul McCartney

My first song pick is "Dance Tonight" by Paul McCartney.  I chose this song for a simple reason.  It makes me happy.  I had the wonderful thrill to be able to see him in concert this past summer and he did play this song in his set.  It was definitely a highlight of my 2010.
